Leadership by Kudan David Kelley
Sempai David W. Kelley brings a rare combination of martial arts experience, public-service leadership, and real-world command responsibility to this week’s training seminar. A Kudan (9th Degree Black Belt) in Uechi-Ryu Karate and a senior student of Buzz Durkin’s Karate School, Kelley began his Uechi training in 1974 and has long been recognized for applying both the soft and hard aspects of Uechi in a practical, disciplined way. His perspective on leadership is shaped not only by decades of training on the dojo floor, but also by a career spent making decisions in demanding environments where composure, accountability, and example matter.
Professionally, Mr. Kelley continues to live a life of service to the people of New Hampshire through work in several fields. Among the most notable chapters of that service was his 25-year career with the New Hampshire State Police, from which he retired in 2007 at the rank of Major. During his time with the State Police, he held significant leadership responsibilities, including command of the Investigative Services Bureau and oversight of specialized investigative teams. Taken together, his experience as a senior karate practitioner and law enforcement leader makes him especially well suited to speak on leadership grounded in service, discipline, and responsibility.
